The Senior RN Clinical Documentation Specialist will work closely with the Denials Team to monitor and evaluate clinical denials trends. Responsibilities primarily include writing appeals on DRG denials related to clinical diagnosis denials. Ensures that appeals are resolved timely to meet regulatory timeframes.

In times of decreased appeal volumes, our Senior RN Clinical Documentation Specialist will facilitate and obtain appropriate physician documentation for any patient clinical condition or procedure to support the appropriate severity of illness, expected risk or mortality and complexity of care as documented in patient medical records. Extensive medical record review and interaction with physicians, nursing staff, patient caregivers and HIM coding professionals will be done to ensure the documentation is complete and accurate.

Qualifications - Minimum

  • 5+ years of Acute Care Nursing experience with specific Med/Surg, Intensive Care, or Emergency Department experience required
  • 2+ years of recent experience in Clinical Documentation required
  • Current RN license in the State of Ohio or Kentucky required
  • Previous appeal writing experience preferred, but not required
  • Associates Degree in Nursing required at minimum with a Bachelors Degree in Nursing preferred; Combination of post-secondary education and experience will be considered in lieu of degree
  • Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist (CCDS) required within 12 months of hire

Shift and Job Schedule

The Senior RN Clinical Documentation Specialist can work out of any of Mercy Health's Hospitals or Revenue Cycle Service Centers in our 7 regions - Cincinnati, Kentucky, Lima, Lorain, Springfield, Toledo and Youngstown. To find out more about our Hospital locations, please click the link below:

This is a 40 hours/week position from 8:00am-4:30pm, with a rotational weekend as needed.
