Job Summary

Oversight of Clinical Documentation Excellence (CDE) of the Northern Markets (Toledo and Lima).  Ensures Clinical Documentation Excellence operations support hospital policy, medical staff by-laws and regulatory and legal requirements, while maintaining a high degree of emphasis on physician satisfaction; maintains departmental policies and procedures accordingly.

Essential Functions:

  • Maintains knowledge of all federal, state, and local documentation guidelines and communicates changes to all market CDE staff; understands I10 and coding guidelines
  • Supports the hospitals' quality operating systems by generating and analyzing data and reports to identify opportunities for continuous growth and improvement; provides feedback to site based teams and administrators, develops and implements action plans when appropriate
  • Audits documentation quality to support accurate statistics and reimbursement for all market acute care sites
  • Develops and monitors implementation of market departmental goals/objectives; oversees the performance improvement process for all markets within the region
  • Monitors CDE computer applications and performs quarterly testing updates as needed
  • Chairs market-level Steering Committees and Documentation Improvement meetings and provides presentation for physician education; liaison for Region Administration
  • Provides supervisor training to ensure expected outcomes and provide site based understanding of documentation improvement and any applicable updates in regulatory guidelines in conjunction with the coding education and quality supervisors
  • Meets regularly with the site and regionally based Physician Documentation Improvement designees
  • Assists with market budgets and operates within the budgetary targets; develops and implements market-based work plans; collaborates with all members of the Revenue Cycle support team, specifically the coding management team to ensure CDE success

  • Defiance Hospital
  • Tiffin Hospital
  • St. Rita's Medical Center

Qualifications - Minimum

  • At least five years of nursing experience in either Med/Surg, Intensive Care, or Emergency Department required
  • At least two years of experience as a Clinical Documentation Specialist, preferably in the Mercy Health system
  • Supervisor management experience strongly preferred
  • Current RN license in the state of Ohio or Kentucky required
  • CCDS (Certified Clinical Documentation Specialist) certification or willingness to obtain certification within one year of role acceptance required
  • 2 year/Associates Degree in Nursing required at minimum with a 4 year/Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred; Combination of post-secondary education and experience will be considered in lieu of degree


Full-Time positon at 40 hours/week from 8:00am-4:30pm. Off-Hours and travel between sites may be necessitated by department needs.
