The AVP, HIM is responsible for performance and effectiveness of the HIM team across the system. The AVP establishes policies and processes for each functional area of HIM, to include HIM Operations, Coding and Release of Information, assuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. This individual works collaboratively with HIM leadership to set short and long range plans and objectives to achieve overall Revenue Cycle goals, as well as fostering a mindset of contniual process improvement.

Essential Functions:

Provides strategic vision, leadership, operational oversight and performance effectiveness for all Health Information Management functions.

Assures all HIM activities are being performed in a consistent manner, following standardized policies and procedures, in accordance with all regulatory requirements, including but not limited to CMS, The Joint Commission, and coding guidelines.

Establishes clear accountabilities and delegation of duties, for each functional area, without creating silos. Develops and maintains an effective, visible and well-respected leadership team by selecting, evaluating, coaching and managing the performance of qualified professionals.

Accountable for comprehensive and effective communication throughout the department that promotes an understanding of the vision and strategies for HIM, as well as the Revenue Cycle as a whole. Promotes a team concept while assuring each individual understands their responsibility to help reach the overall Revenue Cycle goals.

Ongoing monitoring of data to assure departmental and system-wide KPIs are being met. Operates with a mind-set of continual improvement, adjusting KPIs as needed.

Promotes employee engagement, enhanced moral, productivity, retention, and a culture of two-way communications, with the opportunity for staff participation.

Keeps abreast of changes within the field of Health Information Management and leads the review, recommendation, and implementation of new technologies.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education Required:

4 year/Bachelors Degree in Health Information Management or a relevant healthcare discipline.

* Combination of post-secondary education and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.

Preferred Education:

Graduate Degree

Required Certifications:

Registered Health Information Administrator, (RHIA,) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)

Certified Revenue Cycle Representative (CRCR.) Must obtain within 6 months of hire if individual doesn't already possess this certification.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience:

5 - 10 years progressive management experience in Health Information Management.

Overall knowledge of Revenue Cycle activities. Project management experience. Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal and customer service skills required. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment. Experience with, and working knowledge of, HIM technology systems, to include electronic medical records, encoders, and other applications supporting HIM Operations, Clinical Documentation and Release of Information functions. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.

Previous experience working with clinical members of a health system.
